Protecting children from sun damage is one of the most important gifts parents can give. The skin cancer risk from childhood UV exposure is disproportionately high — studies show that just one severe sunburn in childhood doubles the lifetime risk of melanoma. In Qatar's extreme UV environment, sun protection for children is absolutely essential.
Children's skin is more delicate and permeable than adult skin, making them more susceptible to UV damage and to absorbing ingredients through the skin. Babies under 6 months should avoid both direct sun and sunscreen — physical shade and clothing protection are preferred. For children over 6 months, dedicated children's sunscreens formulated for sensitive skin are recommended.
Physical (mineral) sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are universally recommended for children. Unlike chemical filters, physical filters sit on the surface of skin and don't penetrate or absorb — making them safer for babies and children. They're also less likely to cause irritation. Chemical sunscreen filters like oxybenzone have raised concerns about hormone disruption, particularly in young children, leading many experts to recommend physical-only sunscreens for kids.
SPF 50+ is the minimum recommended for children in Qatar's extreme UV conditions. Water-resistant formulas are essential for pool, beach, and any outdoor play involving water or sweat. Broad-spectrum (both UVA and UVB protection) is non-negotiable for full protection.
Stick sunscreens: easy to apply to face, particularly around the sensitive eye area, without the mess of creams. Spray sunscreens: convenient for large body areas but must be rubbed in and not sprayed near the face. Cream sunscreens: provide the most reliable, even coverage — ideal for faces and delicate areas. For toddlers who resist sunscreen application, try making it fun: race to apply it, give them a small amount to "help", or apply to a favorite toy first as a game.
Children need approximately 35ml (7 teaspoons) of sunscreen for full body coverage — the same as adults. A full teaspoon for the face and neck. This amount is much more than most parents apply. Reapply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming, toweling, or excessive sweating. Qatar's pool culture and outdoor play make regular reapplication especially important.
Sunscreen is one component of a comprehensive sun protection plan for children. UPF 50+ swimwear, hats with wide brims covering ears and neck, and UV-protective sunglasses provide physical protection that complements sunscreen. Seek shade between 10am and 2pm when UV is most intense. In Qatar's summer, outdoor play should be scheduled before 9am or after 4pm to minimize peak UV exposure.

Building lifelong sun protection habits starts young. Children who learn that sunscreen is a normal part of getting dressed will carry those habits into adulthood. Make sun protection routine — "we always put on sunscreen before going outside" establishes this habit naturally.
For children over 3 years, most adult sunscreens are suitable — especially mineral formulas. Avoid adult chemical sunscreens on babies and toddlers. Check for fragrance and potential irritants.
Try different formats — some children prefer sprays, others prefer sticks. Get them involved in choosing. Use colorful products that make it fun. Be consistent — children who see parents applying sunscreen routinely will follow suit.
6 months is the general guideline. Under 6 months, use physical shade and protective clothing rather than sunscreen.
Absolutely. During recess, outdoor activities, and transitions between buildings, significant UV exposure occurs. Apply comprehensive coverage before school and remind older children to reapply during the school day if recess occurs midday.
